Chris Thorn – Artist Radiographer using X-rays to create unique images

XrayArtDesign is a contemporary art studio situated in the heart of Mount Edgcumbe. Visitors are welcome Thursday – Sunday throughout the year, where Chris can be found working on new projects.

A gallery display of vibrant, thought provoking X-ray art is always on show. Chris is also renowned for his wildlife sketches and paintings, and is always happy to talk to visitors and fellow artists to compare notes or discuss different styles of work.

Chris says “It is a privilege to come to work in such a beautiful setting, amongst friends nearby who are here creating their own unique work in ceramic, metal, leather, wood, and textiles. Many new visitors, previously unaware that the Barrow Centre holds such a range of ‘makers’ tell me that they intend to come and see us again.” There are shops and activities to enjoy here, as well as ‘The House and Gardens’.

  • Work published in local and national press, US Conservation journal, and featured on BBC TV Springwatch and Autumnwatch
  • ‘X-Ray Bat’ Winner of Wellcome Image Award 2014

Competition Judge Dr Adam Rutherford, Scientist, Author and Broadcaster said

“My love of ‘X-ray Bat’ is more visceral and prosaic. It shows the drama of flight and the delicacy of the gossamer light wings …”

Installed at Exeter University Penryn Campus for six months as their inaugural ‘Creative Exchange Affiliate’ based in the Environment and Sustainability Institute. Making images from X-rays.
